March is National Reading Month, and for those of us along the 30A corridor in South Walton, it’s a timely reminder to do something we probably already love but keep pushing to the back burner: read. Whether you’re a parent trying to get your kids off their tablets, a retiree rediscovering fiction, or someone who hasn’t picked up a book in years, this month was made for you.
More Than Dr. Seuss’s Birthday
National Reading Month is celebrated every March in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2. The goal is simple: motivate people of all ages to read more, not for school, not for a deadline, just for the genuine joy and real benefit of it.
Reading Is Fundamental, one of the country’s leading literacy organizations, has been championing this month for years with daily reading challenges, family literacy activities, and free resources to keep readers of every level engaged throughout March.
Reading Pays Off at Every Age
The benefits go well beyond building a bigger vocabulary. Here’s what regular reading actually does at each stage of life:
-
Young kids: Builds early literacy, vocabulary, and listening comprehension
-
School-age children: Strengthens focus, academic confidence, and critical thinking
-
Teens: Reduces stress and expands perspective in ways that screens rarely do
-
Adults: Sharpens memory, improves analytical thinking, and supports mental well-being
-
Seniors: Keeps the brain active and supports long-term cognitive health
Reading also builds empathy. Following someone else’s story naturally shifts how you see the world, and that’s a skill that carries real value in a close-knit community like 30A.
Your Coastal Library Is Already on It
The Walton County Coastal Branch Library at 437 Greenway Trail in Santa Rosa Beach is the community’s go-to for all things reading. Library cards are completely free for Walton County residents and property owners, and non-residents can pick one up for just $35 a year.
Here’s what’s currently running for all ages:
-
Preschool Story Time every Thursday morning at 10:00 a.m., complete with stories, songs, crafts, and free play until noon
-
Bark for Books every Wednesday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. through May 20, where kids read aloud to a certified therapy dog in a calm, low-pressure setting
-
Reading with a Ranger on the first Thursday of every month at 10:00 a.m., a free nature-themed story time led by a ranger from Topsail Hill Preserve State Park
-
Winter Community Programs on Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m., geared toward adults and covering local history, culture, and community topics
The library is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Small Reading Habits That Actually Stick
No reading challenge app required. A few easy shifts can make reading a natural part of the week:
-
Set a 10-minute reading window before bed for everyone in the house
-
Let kids choose their own books, including graphic novels, comics, and anything they’re genuinely curious about
-
Swap one car ride playlist for an audiobook
-
Try the 3-2-1 method after a chapter: 3 things learned, 2 that stood out, and 1 question still lingering
-
Start a home word wall where kids add new words they come across while reading
The key is making it feel like a choice, not an assignment.
