30A - A Place to Stay & Vacay

30A Community, FL Community

Spring is warming up the 30A coast, the snowbirds are still around, and spring break crowds are right around the corner. If there is one table worth booking before things get packed, it’s at Surfing Deer.

Sitting right at the corner of Scenic Highway 30A and CR 395 in Seagrove Beach, this upscale dinner spot has earned its place among locals and Gulf Coast visitors who want a meal that actually means something.

The Story You Did Not Expect From a Restaurant Name

The name is not random. It traces back to the 1940s, when a developer named C.H. “Cube” McGee purchased what would become Seagrove Beach for a modest $75,000 and shaped it into the soulful coastal community it is today. Cube was also a local character in the best possible way. He had a pet deer named Bambi, and the two of them would walk down to the surf every morning to play along the shoreline.

In 2016, local restaurateurs George and Ann Hartley of the Hartley Restaurant Group chose that story as the foundation of their newest venture. They took over the former location of V Seagrove and built something that honors Cube’s legacy while standing firmly on its own merit. Some locals will tell you that if you get up early enough near the beach, you might still catch a deer wandering the waterline. Whether or not that is true, it is a good excuse to wake up early on a beach vacation.

The Menu Does the Talking

Everything coming out of the Surfing Deer kitchen is made from scratch daily, including the sauces, breads, desserts, and salads. The team sources locally whenever possible, which keeps the flavors honest and the quality consistent. The menu blends American cooking with fresh Gulf seafood and has enough variety to satisfy the whole table.

A few standout dishes worth ordering:

  • Bloody Mary Oysters for a bold, briny way to start

  • Clothesline Bacon because it is exactly as indulgent as it sounds

  • Caramelized Sea Scallops for something elegant and perfectly balanced

  • Havana Grouper with a Caribbean flair that fits the coastal setting

  • Day Boat Fresh Fish served with poblano stone ground grits, hushpuppies, and a Frank’s Red Hot beurre blanc

  • Seafood Acadiana featuring grouper, lobster, crawfish, and shrimp in a butter lobster stock over Cajun brown rice

  • Crispy Vegan Wings are proving that plant-forward dishes belong on an upscale menu

The kitchen takes dietary needs seriously. Vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options are available, so no one at the table feels like an afterthought.

The Bar Scene Is Worth Showing Up Early For

Doors open at 4:30 PM, and the bar crowd takes full advantage of it. The drink lineup includes craft cocktails, wines, a curated wine list, and their own Deer Beer, all backed by a bar staff that clearly enjoys what they do. Whether you are winding down after a beach day or kicking off a birthday dinner, arriving before the rush gives you first pick of the best seats.

Ask for their house-made cornbread when you sit down. It is one of those small details that people keep mentioning.

Indoor, Outdoor, and a Peek at the Gulf

The restaurant offers both indoor seating and a shaded outdoor patio, with views of the Gulf of Mexico right across the road. The atmosphere sits comfortably between upscale and approachable, the kind of place where you can dress nicely without overthinking it.

Valet and lot parking are both available, which is quite a luxury on a busy coastal stretch. Private dining is available for groups, making it a solid option for rehearsal dinners, milestone celebrations, or any gathering that calls for a memorable backdrop.
